Waymo recalls 3,800 robotaxis over freeway glitch

Waymo is recalling more than 3,800 Jaguar I‑Pace robotaxis after a software glitch could propel them into freeway construction zones at speed, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) bulletin revealed. The flaw could let the vehicles maintain highway speeds despite barriers, raising collision risk for workers and other traffic. Waymo has halted freeway operations while engineers develop a patch and notified regulators of recall.

The recall follows two incidents earlier this year. In May, Waymo pulled 3,791 units after an unmanned car drove onto a flooded road in San Antonio and was swept away. A prior safety alert documented robotaxis failing to stop for school buses with active stop signs and flashing lights, prompting another software update.

Waymo stresses the recall does not remove vehicles from service; the software fix will be deployed while the fleet continues operating under the freeway restriction. Analysts say recalls, though costly, help preserve public trust as autonomous services scale.
