US Commerce Department Restores Anthropic AI Model Access After Security Review

Anthropic announced Sunday that the US Commerce Department has lifted export restrictions on its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models, allowing the company to restore customer access starting July 1. The move reverses a previous order requiring Anthropic to block all foreign nationals from accessing these models, even those working for the company domestically.

The restrictions stemmed from security concerns raised by Amazon and other companies about potential jailbreak vulnerabilities. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick approved the reinstatement after Anthropic agreed to implement proactive detection and mitigation measures for security risks. Earlier this week, Mythos 5 was already authorized for approximately 100 US organizations involved in critical infrastructure through Project Glasswing partnerships.

Unlike Mythos 5's targeted rollout, Fable 5 is designed to extend the model's capabilities to general public use. Anthropic had defended its built-in safeguards when initially blocking access, citing measures to prevent misuse of the powerful cybersecurity-focused AI systems. The company expressed gratitude to users for their patience during the restriction period.

This resolution highlights the ongoing tension between advancing AI capabilities and addressing national security concerns. The Commerce Department's letter-based approval process suggests continued government oversight of powerful AI models, while allowing Anthropic to resume commercial operations for both models.
