Tesla has settled a lawsuit tied to a 2023 fatal pedestrian crash in Arizona. The case centered on 71‑year‑old Johna Story, who stepped out of her car to direct traffic when a Model Y using Full Self‑Driving struck her. This was the first pedestrian death linked to Tesla’s automated system.

The incident triggered a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration probe into how the system behaves under glare and poor visibility. Unlike prior suits that targeted the older Autopilot, this suit focused on the newer Full Self‑Driving (Supervised) mode. Tesla has previously settled a similar claim involving a Model X driver who died on Autopilot.

With the settlement terms undisclosed, the case underscores ongoing legal pressure on Tesla as it rolls out autonomous features. The company now faces another lawsuit over a Model 3 crash that month, adding to a growing list of incidents that test the limits of driver‑assist technology. Tesla must refine its safety protocols to avoid repeating past mistakes. Regulators have already issued safety recommendations, urging Tesla to enhance driver monitoring and improve obstacle detection before the next product launch immediately.
