Switch 2 Update Adds Handheld Mode Boost

Nintendo has released update 22.0.0 for Switch 2, introducing "Handheld Mode Boost" to improve older game visuals. The feature forces original Switch games to render at 1080p resolution in handheld mode, addressing the previously blurry 720p images displayed on the larger Switch 2 screen.

Players will see sharper graphics and potentially better performance when enabling Handheld Boost Mode through the system menu. However, this workaround disables motion controls and touchscreen functionality, making some titles incompatible. Super Mario Maker 2 and Zelda: Skyward Sword HD are among the affected games.

The update arrives nearly a year after Switch 2's launch, when this solution seemed obvious. Nintendo has also added new animations for virtual game cards, enhanced GameChat features, and more flight mode customization options. The full patch notes detail all improvements included in this latest system update.
