Square Enix has finally brought the popular HD-2D art style to the main Final Fantasy series with Final Fantasy Resonance. After applying this visual approach to various titles over the past few years, the publisher is now creating a new(ish) entry based on the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, rather than a direct remake like recent Dragon Quest titles.

The game promises to blend classic and modern Final Fantasy elements, featuring turn-based combat with a contemporary twist, iconic airships, chocobos, and appearances from beloved characters like Cloud Strife and Tidus from Final Fantasy X. Square Enix emphasizes this is "far from just a direct port," having been rebuilt as a full-fledged console-quality RPG experience that celebrates both eras of the franchise.

Gamers won't have long to wait, as Final Fantasy Resonance launches October 22, 2026, across PlayStation 5, PC, Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S. The title represents Square Enix's strategic expansion of the HD-2D style beyond its previous applications in the series.
