Ring cameras remain functional even without a paid subscription, offering live video, two-way talk, and motion alerts. While cloud storage of recorded footage requires a plan starting at $4.99/month, the free tier supports real-time monitoring of pets, children, and visitors. Users can speak through the app to delivery people or technicians, and check in remotely via the live feed.
This is ideal for casual oversight rather than forensic evidence. However, privacy concerns persist. A recent lawsuit alleges Ring collected facial recognition data without consent via its Familiar Faces feature.
Following backlash, Ring ended its partnership with Flock Safety and introduced TAKE encryption to give owners full control over footage access.
