OpenAI is developing a unified Mac desktop application, dubbed a 'superapp', that merges its ChatGPT app, Codex coding platform, and Atlas browser according to *The Wall Street Journal*. The move aims to simplify the user experience after launching several standalone products that failed to gain traction. The company is also attempting to recover from the recent success of rival Anthropic.

Executives are reportedly prioritizing agentic AI capabilities within the new superapp, enabling it to autonomously perform tasks like coding and data analysis on a user's computer. OpenAI's chief of applications, Fidji Simo, recently told employees they couldn't afford distractions from 'side quests' due to Anthropic's rapid progress winning enterprise and coding customers. An OpenAI spokeswoman stated the new app will unify teams and focus research efforts on one central product.

Over the coming months, agentic features will first appear in Codex before the full superapp launch, which will also incorporate ChatGPT and Atlas. While no launch timeline was provided, the company's mobile ChatGPT app will remain unchanged.
