Review aggregator Metacritic has removed an AI-generated review of Resident Evil Requiem after discovering it was published by UK gaming site VideoGamer. The review, allegedly written by a fake journalist named Brian Merrygold, raised red flags due to its lack of specific details and awkward writing style that suggested artificial generation rather than human authorship.

As pointed out by users on X, Merrygold's author profile on VideoGamer contained similar AI-generated characteristics, including an oddly written bio and a profile picture with a filename suggesting ChatGPT origin. Kotaku found that other recent bylines at VideoGamer had similarly suspicious profiles, with AI-generated images and accounts created around October 2025.

Metacritic co-founder Marc Doyle confirmed the removal, stating the review and other VideoGamer content from 2026 had been taken down. The aggregator has also emailed publishers about its strict policy against AI-generated reviews, warning it will sever ties with any publication found to be using artificial content. This incident highlights growing concerns about AI-generated content flooding online platforms, with ClickOut Media reportedly laying off staff to pivot toward AI-generated gaming content.
