Meta will shut down its standalone Workrooms VR meeting app on February 16, 2026. The company launched the immersive collaboration space years ago but now says its Horizon platform can handle those tasks natively. The app and all user data will become inaccessible after the cutoff date.

This move follows a broader retreat from the metaverse. Meta recently slashed spending on its Reality Labs division, laying off over 1,000 employees and closing three VR studios. The unit has burned through more than $70 billion since 2021, prompting a strategic shift toward wearables like its AI-powered Ray-Ban smart glasses.

The shutdown extends beyond Workrooms. Meta is also discontinuing Horizon managed services, its subscription for managing Quest headsets, in February. Users can download their Workrooms data before the deadline. The pivot signals Meta's prioritization of tangible hardware over expansive virtual world investments.
