iPhone Lifespan: How Long Will It Last?

Apple devices are known for their durability, and the average lifespan of a new iPhone is generally consistent. While hardware degradation, particularly battery health, is a factor, Apple's commitment to long-term software support is a significant contributor to an iPhone's longevity.

Newer iPhones, like the iPhone 16 or iPhone 17, are expected to receive software updates through at least 2031. This extended support, including security patches, ensures devices remain functional and protected against vulnerabilities. Even older models, such as the iPhone 11 (released in 2019), continue to receive the latest iOS versions, demonstrating Apple's dedication to supporting its devices for many years.

Battery degradation is a common concern, with Apple stating batteries maintain about 80 percent capacity after 1,000 charge cycles. While a battery replacement can revive an older iPhone, eventually, other hardware components may limit performance. Despite the allure of new features and hardware additions, a functional iPhone can often serve its user for five years or more, with battery replacement being the primary expense. Performance on newer iOS versions can also be demanding on older hardware.
