Hubble Captures Comet C/2025 K1 Breaking Apart

NASA and ESA have released new images from the Hubble Space Telescope showing a comet breaking apart as it exits the solar system. The images, captured between November 8-10, 2025, document Comet C/2025 K1 shattering into at least four pieces over several days. This rare event offers scientists an unprecedented view of comet interiors and their composition.

What makes these images particularly remarkable is that photographing K1 wasn't the original study's goal. The research team, led by John Noonan from Auburn University, had to find a new target when their initial comet became unobservable due to technical constraints. The timing proved fortuitous - K1 began disintegrating right as they started observing it.

The 8-kilometer-wide comet was already notable for its size before breaking apart. Scientists are especially intrigued by the lack of carbon in the gases released during the breakup, which they describe as 'chemically very strange.' This unusual composition could provide new insights into comet formation and the early universe.
