How to Customize Your Kindle Screensaver

Amazon still bundles ads on its lower‑priced Kindle models, showing rotating promotions whenever the device sleeps. Those ad‑supported units are about $20 cheaper than ad‑free versions, but the offers lock the screensaver to generic Amazon graphics. Removing Special Offers requires a one‑time $20 payment through the Manage Devices page on Amazon’s website or app. The fee is charged to your Amazon account immediately.

Once ads are disabled, newer Kindles let users display the cover of the book they’re reading as the lock‑screen image. Enable it by opening the three‑dot menu, selecting Device Options, and toggling Display Cover on, or via Screen and Brightness on firmware. Supported models include the 8th‑gen Kindle, Paperwhite (7th gen+), Oasis, Voyage, Colorsoft, and the Scribe. Older devices lack this option and remain stuck with default art.

Custom artwork can appear only by swapping a book’s cover for a self‑made image, then opening that title before sleep. Create a PNG at the Kindle’s resolution (e.g., 2,560 × 1,600 for the latest Paperwhite), convert it to an EPUB cover with Calibre, and send the file via Send‑to‑Kindle. Though clunky, the trick offers a legal way to personalize the screensaver.
