Gracenote Sues OpenAI Over Metadata Copyright Claims

Nielsen-owned Gracenote has filed a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging unauthorized use of its entertainment metadata and database structure. The metadata specialist creates content descriptions and identifiers that TV providers use for content discovery. This case stands apart from typical AI copyright disputes because it targets not just the data itself but also the underlying framework for organizing that information.

Most AI copyright lawsuits focus on training data used by large language models, but Gracenote's complaint introduces a new dimension by claiming infringement of its dataset's structure and sequence. According to the filing, OpenAI could have licensed Gracenote's data or limited training to public domain information but chose neither option. The company states that OpenAI improperly copied its metadata to create commercial AI products without compensation.

Gracenote has successfully negotiated AI partnerships with other tech giants, recently signing deals with Samsung and Google for AI initiatives. The company claims previous attempts to establish licensing agreements with OpenAI were ignored or rebuffed. This legal action represents a significant escalation in the ongoing battle between content creators and AI companies over intellectual property rights in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
