Modern EV batteries are outperforming early predictions. After five years, the average car retains 95 percent of its original range, far better than the 2010 expectations that saw rapid degradation. Real‑world data shows only 0.3 percent of vehicles built from 2022 onward required a full battery replacement. These findings dispel the early fears that battery degradation would make owning an EV prohibitively expensive.

Geotab analysis of over 22,700 EVs found an average degradation of 2.3 percent per year, suggesting that batteries could realistically last 20 years or more. Advances in chemistry, smarter management systems, and improved thermal regulation are key drivers, along with a shift towards repairable packs. Lab tests, which use continuous constant‑current discharge, overestimate wear; realistic driving cycles extend life by up to 38 percent. This resilience is reflected in consumer surveys that now show reduced concern over battery replacement costs.

Owners can further protect their packs. High‑power fast charging above 100 kW degrades batteries at twice the rate of lower‑power charging, and keeping the state of charge between 20 % and 80 % reduces long‑term wear. As degradation rates fall and replacement costs drop, the ownership case for EVs strengthens each year.
