Apple's digital car key feature, introduced with iOS 14, allows compatible iPhones to store digital car keys, enabling users to unlock, lock, and even start their vehicles with a tap. This functionality utilizes NFC and Bluetooth technology, mirroring the convenience of Apple Pay.

Initially limited to a few models, the feature has expanded to include various car brands such as BMW, Hyundai, and Rivian. To use digital car keys, you need an iPhone XS or later (or a second-gen iPhone SE or newer) running iOS 13 or later. The setup process varies by manufacturer, often requiring the carmaker's app and direct interaction with the vehicle.

Digital keys are cryptographically secured in the Wallet app. 'Express Mode' allows for unlocking without needing to unlock your phone first. Keys can be shared via the Wallet app, and if an iPhone is lost, its digital keys can be disabled through the Find My app. Notably, even after an iPhone's battery dies, Express Mode-enabled keys remain accessible for up to five hours.
