Chat with Gemini in Google Maps on CarPlay

Google has started rolling out an update that lets iPhone users chat with Gemini while using Google Maps through CarPlay. For drivers who prefer Google Maps for navigation, the update brings Gemini in navigation directly to the car's display.

Once Maps is open, a new Gemini icon appears toward the bottom right of the interface. Tapping it lets drivers ask the chatbot questions while they drive. Google says this offers a conversational way to find stops on the go, report traffic disruptions, and get information about places. Gemini is especially good at answering multi-part questions, such as "what park is famous for gorgeous views overlooking the city?"

The feature begins rolling out today to CarPlay users in the US and around the world. As with most updates, it may take a few days to reach every device, so users who don't see it right away should be patient.

The update follows Google's announcement that it had begun rolling out Gemini Personal Intelligence to Android Auto users. When enabled, that feature lets the chatbot pull information from a user's other Google apps to personalize its responses. Google says Personal Intelligence strengthens Gemini's reasoning and helps the assistant deliver more specific details tied to a user's questions and prompts.
