Bilibili Expands Globally with New International App

Bilibili, China's video platform, is expanding internationally with a new global app and English website. The company relaunched its international Android app and plans an iOS version, removing previous identity verification requirements that demanded passport or ID documents for overseas users. This move allows Bilibili to mix global and Chinese content within the same app.

The platform is actively courting YouTubers to post content and hiring staff in major cities including Los Angeles, London, Mexico City, São Paulo, Istanbul, and Tokyo. These efforts aim to attract Western viewers and creators to the platform.

While these changes could help Bilibili grow its audience, they also raise questions about potential regulatory scrutiny similar to what TikTok faced, ultimately forcing the sale of its US business over national security concerns. If successful in converting video creators, Bilibili could intensify competition for YouTube, which is already facing pressure from Netflix's expansion into video podcasts and creator-focused content. Bloomberg reports YouTube is working on exclusive content deals to maintain its competitive edge.
