Beat Weaver: Indie Rhythm Game Blends Amplitude and Thumper

Indie rhythm game Beat Weaver is set to launch later this year, combining elements from classic titles like Amplitude and Thumper. Developed by solo creator Christopher Lerch under Echolox Interactive, the game features a ship navigating along musical tracks where players must hit notes in time while managing energy levels.

Unlike traditional rhythm games, Beat Weaver allows players to switch between up to 16 instrument tracks at will. Tracks must be unlocked by playing note sequences flawlessly, and each active track drains energy. If energy depletes and a mistake occurs, all unlocked tracks reset, requiring players to rebuild their mix strategically. Lerch designed the game to emphasize flow state rather than perfect accuracy, with multiple difficulty levels and powerups that slow or rewind tracks.

Originally started in 2017 as a hobby project, Beat Weaver gained momentum after Lerch received funding from Germany's Press Start: Games Founding Grant program last year. The developer built a custom engine without generative AI, using shader code and mathematical expressions instead of traditional texture mapping. This approach allows the game to run on older machines. Lerch composed much of the soundtrack himself and plans to reveal featured artists later, with custom song support requiring separate audio files for each instrument.
