Apple's New Siri Draws Boundaries Against AI Romance Attempts

Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of engineering, confirmed that the upcoming Siri overhaul will actively resist users trying to form romantic connections with the assistant. In an interview with the Mostly Human podcast, Federighi explained that unlike competing chatbots that prioritize engagement through sycophancy, Apple designed Siri with clear boundaries in mind.

Federighi noted that existing chatbots often encourage personal disclosure to build emotional connections, but Siri will redirect conversations toward task completion instead. 'I'm here to help you. I can help you get things done,' he said, emphasizing Apple's focus on utility over personality. Greg Joswiak added that Apple wants its technology to fade into the background, letting users concentrate on their goals rather than crafting perfect prompts.

The redesigned assistant, powered by Gemini and announced at WWDC 2024 after significant delays, will integrate deeply across iOS. It can search the web, interpret on-screen context, and leverage personal information to complete tasks within Camera, Photos, and other native apps. Apple also plans to launch a standalone Siri application.

This approach reflects Apple's broader philosophy of invisible, helpful technology rather than anthropomorphic AI companions. By avoiding the relationship-building tactics that characterize ChatGPT and Claude, Apple positions Siri as a productivity tool competing on usefulness, not personality.
