Amazon's Panay Teases More Alexa Devices and Neo Design

Amazon has been releasing hardware at a rapid pace, and the newly announced Alexa Tablet series marks a notable shift. The line replaces the popular Fire tablet family and places Amazon's AI assistant front and center. Panos Panay, Amazon's Senior Vice President of Devices and Alexa, confirmed that it is the first Amazon hardware product carrying Alexa as its brand, though he declined to say whether more Alexa-branded devices are coming. "No, it's just when it makes sense," he said, before adding coyly, "not that you've seen."

Panay did offer a clue about the software side. Asked whether the layer that adds Alexa to the tablets' Android operating system has a name, he revealed that Ralf Groene, who leads design for Amazon Devices & Services, is developing what he calls a Neo design language. He described it as a "structure of how we're moving information," aimed at getting users back to what they were doing wherever they are. Panay also said the Echo speakers and displays will get their own spotlight, with more details expected later this month.

Panay pointed to a growing problem: as people use more AI agents and apps, their experiences become fragmented. Answers found in one app are easily lost when users switch to another. "We have this frame that's meant to connect it all simply," he said, promising more at the end of the month.

Based on the Alexa tablets' interface and Panay's remarks, Amazon appears to be building a cross-device ecosystem with Alexa at its core. Existing features already hint at this direction. The Ember Artline Fire TV can resume a Prime Video show paused in another room, and the new tablets can continue conversations started on an Echo Show. The Alexa app, available on iOS, Android and the web, reinforces that continuity.
