X-Plane 12 Flight Simulator Coming to Apple Vision Pro via CloudXR

Apple Vision Pro users will soon get access to the popular X-Plane 12 flight simulator through Nvidia CloudXR streaming technology in visionOS 26.4. The simulator, which launches later this spring, represents a significant expansion of gaming options for the spatial computing headset. X-Plane 12 will be distributed as an App Store download that streams gameplay via Nvidia's CloudXR 6.0 platform.

This development addresses one of the Apple Vision Pro's biggest limitations: its sparse VR game library. Like Nvidia GeForce Now, CloudXR enables high-fidelity game streaming from remote PCs to the headset. However, VR streaming presents unique challenges including maintaining high resolution, fast frame rates, and minimal latency to prevent motion sickness. The Apple Vision Pro's lack of an Ethernet port and older Wi-Fi 6 connectivity could further complicate streaming performance.

The X-Plane team has leveraged both ARKit and foveated streaming to optimize the experience. The simulator will track cockpit positions using ARKit to create a mixed-reality environment compatible with physical peripherals like yokes and rudder pedals. While X-Plane 12 appears game-like, it's actually a sophisticated simulation program used by pilots for training, with full hardware setups costing thousands of dollars.
