Apple's main processor supplier TSMC has announced plans to build four more plants in Arizona costing a total of $100 billion, raising its total US investment to $265 billion. The new facilities will include factories making "2nm and below" processors plus advanced packaging. TSMC's first Arizona plant is already producing 4-nanometer wafers, with 2nm manufacturing previously targeted for 2030.

CEO CC Wei said the company will "try to speed it up as fast as possible," though timing depends on "the market situation and customer demand." The investment follows TSMC's latest earnings report showing profits rose 77%, driven by demand for AI processors. Wei believes AI processor demand will remain very strong until 2029-2030.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated the investment would "create tens of thousands of American jobs and bring advanced semiconductor manufacturing back to America." Political factors also drive the expansion: the CIA privately briefed Tim Cook that TSMC fears a Chinese invasion of Taiwan by 2027, and the Trump administration has pressured companies to reshore manufacturing.
