The Thread Group is pushing forward with improvements to its wireless standard for smart home networks, as discussed on the Smart Home Insider podcast with guest Ann Olivo, who holds leadership roles at both Silicon Labs and Thread Group. These developments follow the recent Unify conference hosted by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, where multiple groups shared updates on interoperability standards.

Apple released iOS 27 beta 2 to developers this week, bringing additional AI enhancements to Apple Home and enabling Apple TV updates through the Home app. Code references to Siri AI in tvOS 27 suggest upcoming Apple Intelligence features in new hardware models. Meanwhile, Signify plans to launch select Hue bulbs later in 2026 that support both Matter-over-Thread and Zigbee simultaneously, allowing direct Matter network connections while maintaining Hue Bridge functionality.

Google began shipping its Gemini-powered smart speaker priced at $99, positioned as a competitor to HomePod mini with similar round design but enhanced AI capabilities. Apple also raised prices on HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV 4K, citing increased AI-related demand. The Thread Group announced partnerships with the Broadband Forum and released a beta Thread network management app.

Thread is developing long-range implementations to challenge Z-Wave Long Range and working on Thread Direct, which would eliminate the need for Thread Border Routers. These moves aim to simplify smart home setup and improve device compatibility across ecosystems.
