iOS 26 Reduce Interruptions: How Apple's Focus Mode Works

Apple's new Reduce Interruptions feature in iOS 26 uses Apple Intelligence to filter notifications while ensuring you don't miss important alerts. Unlike previous Focus Modes, this setting automatically prioritizes notifications based on urgency and relevance, making it harder to miss critical updates like meeting reminders or urgent messages.

The feature builds on Apple's existing Focus Modes system introduced in 2021, but adds AI-powered intelligence that can't be disabled. Users can still control which contacts and apps can break through by creating whitelists, choosing between 'Allow Notifications From' or 'Silence Notifications From' for both people and applications.

While the automation offers convenience, it also raises questions about control. Apple Intelligence makes judgment calls about notification priority, similar to how Siri previously managed Focus Modes based on your routines. Users retain control over whitelists and scheduling, but must trust the system's algorithms to handle the heavy lifting of deciding what's truly important.
