Hardware Apple II Clone Recreated Without Emulation Using Modern Components

Simon Boak built a hardware Apple II Plus clone using modern parts like SRAM and Raspberry Pi Pico. Unlike emulators, this headless clone generates video natively via VGA and uses a 4.096 MHz oscillator. The 3D-printed case mirrors the Apple Pro File, with glue-free assembly and openable lid for easy access.

Boak’s project avoids emulation by recreating the Apple II’s logic chips, including the 6502 CPU, and repurposing original circuit diagrams. The clone outputs 48K memory via SRAM, eliminating DRAM refresh circuitry. A matching LCD monitor and USB keyboard support were also designed, showcasing hardware-first innovation.
