Final Cut Pro for iPad: Use External SSD or Lose Projects

AppleInsider reports Final Cut Pro for iPad users risk losing their work if they don't use an external SSD. The app, part of the Apple Creator Studio bundle, stores projects internally by default. Deleting and reinstalling the app wipes the internal library, resulting in lost videos. This issue stems from a bug that can corrupt projects.

To avoid data loss, the recommendation is to save projects on an external drive. You must specify the external drive as the project location at the start. This setting is found in the project setup dialog, under "Location." The iPad's internal storage isn't an option. This method mirrors how Final Cut Pro on macOS handles project storage.

Using an external SSD offers other benefits. It provides more storage for larger projects and facilitates easier transfer of projects between devices. Although it requires the SSD to be plugged in, it's preferable to redoing an entire edit. Apple is investigating the bugs, but the fix is to use an external drive.

This issue underscores the importance of backup strategies for creative professionals. While cloud storage is an option, using an external drive provides a direct, accessible backup. The bug highlights the need for data safety in creative workflows. It is also a reminder to save frequently and back up all important project files.
