Apple sued over ICE app censorship claims

A federal lawsuit accuses Attorney General Pam Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem of pressuring Apple, Google, and Meta to remove apps and social media groups documenting ICE activities. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) filed the suit Wednesday, alleging First Amendment violations through government coercion.

FIRE represents app creator Mark Hodges and Facebook group founder Kae Rosado, whose tools allowed public monitoring of ICE operations. Hodges developed the "Eyes Up" app for sharing ICE-related videos, while Rosado created a Chicago-based group after witnessing community fear during ICE raids. Both platforms were removed following alleged government pressure.

The lawsuit claims Bondi directly contacted Apple and Google demanding removal of ICE-critical apps like Eyes Up and ICEBlock. Apple confirmed removing similar apps, citing "safety risks" communicated by law enforcement. The case seeks court findings that Bondi and Noem violated First Amendment protections and requests an injunction against future censorship efforts.
