Apple Seeks Trump Approval to Source RAM from Blacklisted Chinese Supplier CXMT

Apple has petitioned the Trump administration for permission to purchase RAM chips from CXMT, a Chinese memory supplier blacklisted by the Pentagon for alleged military ties. The move aims to address ongoing global memory chip shortages that have forced Apple to raise prices on Macs and iPads. CXMT appears on the Chinese Military Company Blacklist, which restricts U.S. government contracts and procurement.

The tech industry faces mounting pressure from memory chip scarcity, with costs trickling down to consumers. Apple previously passed increased manufacturing expenses to buyers earlier this year. While CXMT isn't currently on the Commerce Department's Entity List, it faced potential inclusion in 2025 amid U.S.-China trade negotiations. The company's blacklisted status means Apple could lose Defense Department sales worth millions if it proceeds with the deal.

Republican lawmakers have already signaled opposition, with House China Committee chair John Moolenaar calling any partnership a "grave mistake." Senator Marco Rubio previously warned Apple was "playing with fire" when considering Chinese memory suppliers in 2022. The political backlash could prove more damaging than the supply chain issues themselves, threatening Apple's government contracts and public image.

Despite CEO Tim Cook's diplomatic relationships, securing approval appears unlikely given current tensions. Apple's pursuit of alternative suppliers reflects genuine industry-wide supply constraints, but the reputational and financial risks may outweigh the benefits. The company essentially faces a choice between immediate cost relief and long-term government market access.
