Apple absorbs Swift Package Index, keeps it open source

Apple has taken control of the Swift Package Index, the community‑run search engine for third‑party Swift code, but the service will stay open source. Launched in 2015 to support the now‑12‑year‑old Swift language, the index gave developers a single place to discover packages that integrate with Xcode’s Swift Package Manager, and integrate more deeply with its developer tools.

The index already indexed over 10,000 Swift packages earlier this year, supplying auto‑generated documentation that lists platform compatibility for iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS and integration steps. Community contributors have been essential, and Apple’s statement stresses that external code contributions will continue alongside its engineers. With more testing resources, developers can expect faster validation of package quality and compatibility.

Maintaining open‑source status means the index will keep its transparent governance and allow third‑party improvements, a model that has helped Swift gain traction beyond Apple’s platforms. By folding the project into its ecosystem, Apple can align package discovery with upcoming language features and tooling updates. The service will remain freely accessible for all Swift developers starting today across all Apple‑supported environments immediately.
