Rokid adds Gemini AI to $300 smart glasses, eyes software edge

Rokid’s head of product, Xu, sat down with Android Central to discuss the company’s latest AI Glasses Style and its upcoming waveguide‑based models. The new frames ship for roughly $300, positioning them as a cheaper alternative to Meta’s Ray‑Ban collaboration. A key selling point is native integration of Google’s Gemini AI, which lets users swap between multiple large‑language models on‑device.

Xu explained that offering several AI back‑ends isn’t a gimmick; it gives developers freedom to tailor responses for specific tasks, from translation to contextual search. The company also aims to build an open ecosystem based on global standards, hoping third‑party apps can tap the glasses’ sensors without proprietary lock‑in. Hardware is limited to a single colour and style, but extra variants are on the roadmap.

Battery life remains the biggest hurdle; Rokid is prototyping a low‑power co‑processor to offload routine tasks, mirroring smartwatch designs, and has explored external battery connectors despite the added bulk. Silicon‑carbon cells were mentioned but dismissed as too costly for sub‑$600 units. Ultimately, Xu believes software differentiation—gesture controls, QR‑based payments, and native Spotify links—will set Rokid apart in a crowded market.
