Google Tests Android Auto Media Player Redesign

Google is testing a redesigned Android Auto media card that prioritizes playback controls over oversized album art, according to an APK teardown by Android Authority. The new layout adds quick-access buttons like Like, Shuffle, and Repeat, depending on the media app you're using.

The expanded controls appear limited to vehicles with larger infotainment displays, while smaller screens get a simplified layout. This follows other recent interface changes announced at Google I/O 2026, including Immersive Navigation in Google Maps.

Android Central notes the update addresses a long-standing usability issue but criticizes Google for gatekeeping the best features behind hardware specs. The new media player remains hidden in recent builds with no official release date.

If shipped, the redesign could make controlling music faster with fewer taps. Author Jay Bonggolto covers consumer tech for Android Central.
