Google Messages Adds Tap to Draft Smart Replies to Beta

Google Messages is testing a new Smart Reply option that changes how preset responses are handled, moving from instant sending to allowing edits before dispatch. The feature, spotted in beta version 20260303, introduces a toggle in Settings > Suggestions. Users can now choose between the existing Tap to send behavior or the new Tap to draft option. This change inserts the reply into the text field first, giving users a chance to modify it before hitting send.

The update addresses a long-standing user frustration with Smart Replies, as the original instant-send method often led to hasty responses. Google Messages has been rolling out several QoL improvements recently, including copy-paste limitations and real-time location sharing. While the feature is currently limited to the beta, its potential rollout to the stable app could make Smart Replies significantly more user-friendly.

The new behavior feels like a long-overdue refinement that should boost user confidence in using the feature more frequently.
