Google Home Outage Breaks Nest Devices Globally

A widespread Google Home outage left Nest devices unresponsive worldwide, affecting Nest Hubs, Nest Minis, Google Home speakers, and third-party Assistant displays. Users reported broken voice commands, slow responses, failed routines, and frozen screens stuck on white or loading animations.

The issue appeared to stem from Google's servers rather than individual hardware failures, as the same problems occurred across multiple devices and regions. Standard troubleshooting steps like rebooting or factory resets proved ineffective, with some devices remaining stuck even after a reset.

Derrek Lee, Android Central's managing editor, experienced the outage firsthand when a voice command to turn off his TV failed initially and then took roughly 30 seconds to execute. Downdetector and Status Gator logged hundreds of reports from users across the US and other countries overnight.

Google had not publicly explained the cause at the time, though some users later reported devices coming back online. The incident highlighted the vulnerability of cloud-dependent smart homes, raising questions about how much smart home functionality should rely on Google's backend infrastructure.
