Galaxy XR Turns Into Steam Machine with Free GameHub App

The Samsung Galaxy XR has become a portable gaming powerhouse thanks to a free app called GameHub. Developed by GameSir, this app lets users run their entire Steam library natively on the Android XR headset without cloud streaming or subscriptions. The setup requires only a Bluetooth controller and your Steam credentials, making it remarkably straightforward.

GameHub is essentially a user-friendly fork of the Winlator app, which has long been used to emulate Windows on Android devices. Once installed, the app presents a SteamOS-like interface where users can browse and install games directly from their library. Performance is surprisingly robust - Portal 2 runs at a locked 60fps, comparable to the Steam Deck. The app includes a compatibility checker to assess whether specific games will run well on the XR's hardware.

This development brings three of the four key features expected from the upcoming Steam Frame headset to the Galaxy XR today. While native PC VR game support remains exclusive to the Steam Frame, the Galaxy XR already offers foveated streaming, a dedicated wireless network, and now native Steam game compatibility. The achievement is particularly notable given that the app must translate x86 code to the headset's ARM processor, yet delivers performance on par with dedicated gaming hardware.
