WhatsApp's Anti-Spoiler Feature Coming Soon

WhatsApp is developing a spoiler protection feature that will let users hide message content until recipients choose to reveal it. The feature, spotted in the latest TestFlight build by WABetaInfo, will add a new formatting option alongside existing tools like Bold and Italic.

When activated, the spoiler formatting will cover text with a gray bar that recipients must tap to reveal. Users can either select the formatting option from the pop-up menu or manually add double pipes (||) before and after the content they want to hide. The syntax is straightforward: ||spoiler text||.

Currently in development for text messages, the feature has no confirmed timeline for release but is also being tested in WhatsApp's Android beta. This suggests WhatsApp may roll it out to both platforms relatively soon. The addition addresses growing demand for better content control in messaging apps, particularly for users who want to avoid accidentally revealing plot points or sensitive information to others.
