TSMC May Build 12 Arizona Chip Plants – Skepticism Persists

Apple chipmaker TSMC had already announced a plan to build eight fabrication facilities in Arizona. A recent investment boost could raise that number to 12, sparking excitement but also skepticism. The new plants would support U.S. chip production, potentially benefiting Apple devices, though key doubts remain.

TSMC limits its most advanced processes to plants in Taiwan, meaning U.S. sites can only produce chips for older Apple products—roughly three generations back. Even then, the raw wafers are just the first step; Apple’s final chips require complex packaging Missions. Initially, the Arizona plant was dubbed a "paperweight", until TSMC announced plans to build U.S. packaging facilities.

The Trump administration announced an additional $100 billion investment, bringing TSMC’s U.S. spend to $265 billion and a total of 12 facilities. However, CC Wei, TSMC’s chief executive, said the expansion would likely add only four new plants, with no concrete timeline—subject to the 'market situation' and potential partnerships with Intel or Samsung.

The announcement carries the hallmarks of a political pitch: a headline about U.S. growth that may or may not materialize, with timing left vague. Until TSMC confirms concrete milestones, investors and industry observers should treat the projected 12 Arizona plants as optimistic rather than guaranteed.
