Sonos Cancels Apple TV 4K Rival Over Software Shortfalls

Sonos CEO Tom Conrad has revealed the company abandoned plans for a streaming video box codenamed Pinewood that would have directly competed with the Apple TV 4K. The project was canceled before launch due to insufficient software resources to execute it properly. Conrad confirmed Pinewood's existence during an interview, marking the first public acknowledgment of the abandoned hardware initiative.

Pinewood was reportedly planned for release between 2022 and 2024, with a target price range of $200 to $400. The streaming device would have entered a market where Apple's premium offering starts at $129 for the current Apple TV 4K model. Conrad explained that even if Sonos had met the original release timeline, the product wouldn't have shipped on schedule due to inadequate staffing.

The decision reflects Sonos's strategic focus on its core audio expertise rather than expanding into video streaming. With the Apple TV 4K now three years old since its November 2022 update, consumers have been vocal about wanting next-generation hardware. Sonos's choice to avoid this competitive space underscores the challenges smaller companies face when attempting to challenge Apple's ecosystem.
