Netflix Tightens Password Sharing Crackdown With Email Requirements

Netflix is escalating its fight against password sharing by requiring unique email addresses for each profile. The streaming giant began rolling out this new barrier two weeks ago, asking users to associate distinct emails with their viewing profiles. While Netflix frames this as enabling better personalization and sign-in access, the move directly targets households with multiple profiles sharing one account.

The company's anti-sharing efforts began in 2022 when it demanded all users reside at the same address, charging fees for remote access. Netflix later deployed IP address and device ID tracking to identify unauthorized sharing. Users have already found simple workarounds, including Gmail address variations and temporarily disabling WiFi during login. These loopholes suggest the technical barriers may be more inconvenience than enforcement.

Meanwhile, Amazon faces legal pressure in Australia over Prime Video advertisements. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission alleges the company imposed ads on subscribers without compensation between November 2023 and August 2025, affecting over one million users. Even subscribers paying extra to remove ads still encounter them on certain content due to licensing restrictions.

Both developments reflect streaming services prioritizing revenue over user experience. Netflix's email requirement feels like busywork for legitimate customers, while Amazon's ad strategy creates confusion about what subscribers actually purchase.
