### iPhone Duo Apps Face Compatibility Challenges

When **iPhone Duo** arrives next month, many third-party apps may not work as well as Apple's built-in apps initially. There are three compatibility levels: apps built for iOS 26 and earlier run without utilizing the larger display; iOS 27 apps look better but still waste screen space; and full iPhone Duo compatibility takes complete advantage of the display. Apps using standard system controls get a head start, but custom toolbars require significant additional work beyond the iOS 27.1 SDK.

Apple will provide developer tools before launch, but a new Xcode version and iOS 27.1 beta are needed first. Most developers won't access real iPhone Duo hardware until launch day. Apps with heavy custom layout work face a longer optimization road.

Despite being niche initially, iPhone Duo's $2000 price point suggests users spend more on App Store purchases. Major social media, banking apps, and games will be key areas to watch. Perfect preparation on day one isn't expected given the ambitious new iOS layout.

iPhone Duo ships to customers on October 23, with pre-orders starting October 16.
