Apple's decade-long experiment with display cutouts takes its next step this fall. The iPhone 18 Pro will shrink the Dynamic Island by roughly 35 percent, according to supply chain rumors tracked by 9to5Mac. That reduction marks the second major downsizing since the notch debuted on the iPhone X in 2017.

The original notch housed Face ID sensors in a prominent black bar. The iPhone 14 Pro replaced it with the pill-shaped Dynamic Island, which integrated software animations to mask the hardware. Now Apple appears ready to compress that island further, reclaiming screen real estate while the underlying sensors presumably migrate beneath the panel.

The shift won't stay confined to the Pro line. A rumored MacBook Ultra is expected to adopt a smaller Dynamic Island, and the budget-friendly iPhone 18e could follow next year. iOS 27's redesigned Siri interface also hints at the tighter cutout. Apple's endgame remains a truly uninterrupted display — no notch, no island, no compromise.
