Claude Fable 5 Returns After US Lifts Anthropic Export Restrictions

Anthropic will restore access to Claude Fable 5 beginning Wednesday, July 1, after the US Department of Commerce lifted export control restrictions that forced the model offline nearly three weeks ago. The company confirmed the development on X, ending a suspension that began June 12 when regulators barred foreign nationals from accessing the AI models.

The restrictions stemmed from concerns raised by Amazon researchers, who discovered prompts that could elicit information potentially useful for cyberattacks. These findings reportedly prompted conversations between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and the White House, leading to the emergency directive. Anthropic had just 90 minutes to comply and chose to take both Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 offline entirely.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed that Anthropic agreed to proactively detect security risks, work with government on future release protocols, and report malicious activity. This agreement cleared the way for the models' return. The company previously announced Claude Mythos 5 would be available to over 100 US institutions, with Fable 5's broader availability still being negotiated.

Users should begin seeing Claude Fable 5 return on Wednesday, though Anthropic hasn't specified whether access will be immediate or rolled out gradually. The resolution ends weeks of uncertainty for subscribers who lost access to one of Anthropic's flagship AI models.
