Apple researchers are exploring how generative AI can improve app development. A new study focuses on enhancing the quality of UI code generated by AI models. They're moving beyond code compilation to focus on design aesthetics and functionality. The goal is to make AI-generated interfaces more closely resemble real-world design standards and preferences.

Instead of relying on standard methods, the team had professional designers directly critique and improve AI-generated UIs. Designers offered comments, sketches, and hands-on edits, which were then used to fine-tune the model. This method, using designer-native feedback, produced higher-quality UI designs. The study used Qwen2.5-Coder as the base model.

The results show that using designer feedback, especially with sketches and direct revisions, led to better UI designs. The best-performing model even outperformed GPT-5. However, the researchers noted that subjectivity in design presents challenges. They found that feedback through sketching and direct edits yielded better consensus on design improvements.

This research indicates a shift toward more human-centered AI in design. The success of using designer feedback shows the importance of integrating expert insights. As AI continues to evolve, expect to see more of these collaborative approaches, potentially streamlining the app development process and improving user experiences.
