Apple M6 Chip Limited to Few Devices Before M7 Arrival

Apple's M6 chip generation appears unusually narrow. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports Apple will ship only a base M6 chip this fall — no M6 Pro or M6 Max variants — and plans to accelerate the M7 generation, which is designed around major on-device AI processing improvements. M7 could arrive as early as the first half of 2026.

The primary confirmed M6 product is a base-model MacBook Pro retaining the current industrial design. Two other candidates for M6 updates include a spring 2027 iPad Pro and an early 2027 MacBook Air, though the iPad Pro might instead debut with M7. Meanwhile, the M6 generation will reportedly skip the Mac mini, iMac, Mac Studio, and high-end MacBook Pros entirely.

This compressed timeline suggests Apple is prioritizing AI silicon over traditional annual refreshes. The M5 lineup still has products slated for release in coming months, but buyers eyeing desktop Macs or pro laptops face a choice: buy current M4 hardware or wait for M7 in 2026. The strategy marks a departure from Apple's usual tiered chip rollout.
