Apple Enterprise Printing Bug Stuns IT Admins After Security Update

Apple's March 2026 security updates for macOS broke enterprise printing functionality, creating immediate problems for corporate IT teams. The patches for macOS 26.4, 15.7.5, and 14.8.5 caused Paper Cut's Mobility Print service to prompt users for authentication on every print job instead of using stored credentials.

The bug affects all discovery modes including Known Host, mDNS, and DNS discovery, forcing macOS to ignore keychain-stored credentials. For large organizations and schools, this translates into flooding help desks with tickets for an issue IT teams cannot immediately resolve. Paper Cut has an open support request with Apple regarding the authentication failures.

Users with Mobility Print queues deployed through Print Deploy remain unaffected, and a workaround exists for organizations struggling with the authentication prompts. However, the incident highlights a critical challenge as Apple expands into enterprise markets: security patches cannot disrupt core business operations like printing. IT administrators need reliable, predictable updates that don't break established workflows.
