Apple quietly acquired invrs.io LLC in October 2025, purchasing the company's sole employee and certain assets. The European Commission published details this week after a four-month waiting period. The employee in question is Martin Schubert, who founded invrs.io in 2023 to develop AI-guided design frameworks.

Schubert's work focused on optical and photonics technologies for AR/VR and data centers. His company created open-source frameworks for photonics research, offering standardized simulation challenges and public leaderboards for benchmarking design results. The acquisition notice on the European Commission's website describes invrs.io's contributions to photonics research.

Schubert previously worked at Alphabet's X on AI-powered photonic design and at Meta, making him a notable hire for Apple's hardware ambitions. While his systems could benefit future Apple Vision Pro development, Apple hasn't disclosed what specific projects he'll work on. This acquisition follows Apple's reported $2 billion purchase of Israeli AI audio startup Q.ai last month, which was Apple's second-largest acquisition ever after the $3 billion Beats purchase in 2014.
