Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 Returns After US Lifts Export Controls

Anthropic has restored access to its Claude Fable 5 AI model globally, following a nearly three-week suspension due to US export control directives. The US Department of Commerce cleared the AI developer to redeploy the model after agreeing to enhanced security protocols and proactive risk detection. This move signifies a resolution to a significant regulatory hurdle for the AI company.

The export controls were triggered by concerns, notably raised by Amazon researchers, that Fable 5 could be manipulated to provide information useful in cyberattacks. In response, the Commerce Department issued a directive on June 12, forcing Anthropic to disable both Fable 5 and Mythos 5. This led to extensive negotiations between Anthropic and the White House.

Fable 5 is now available across Anthropic’s platforms, including Claude.ai and Claude Cowork. For Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans, it will be included up to 50% of weekly usage limits until July 7, after which it transitions to usage credits. Access on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry is also being re-enabled promptly.

While Mythos 5 remains restricted to a curated list of US institutions, the general availability of Fable 5 marks a significant step forward for Anthropic's product deployment. The company continues to work with the government to expand access for additional partners.
