Apple is reportedly preparing to launch AirPods Pro 3 with built-in IR cameras as its first AI wearable product, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The company has three AI wearable products in development: AirPods with cameras, Apple Glasses, and a pendant with built-in camera. AirPods Pro 3 is expected to launch this year with visual intelligence features powered by the new cameras.

Unlike the failed Humane AI pin or Meta's early adopter AI glasses, AirPods offer a familiar form factor that millions already use daily. The wireless earbuds have become ubiquitous in public spaces, making them an ideal Trojan horse for introducing AI capabilities. Apple doesn't need to convince users to adopt a new category since AirPods already deliver compelling audio experiences without AI features.

By adding cameras to a proven product, Apple can test AI companion features at scale before moving to more ambitious wearables like Apple Glasses. The company can gather real-world usage data from AirPods to refine the AI experience, making future products more polished. AirPods with cameras may lack the wow factor of smart glasses, but they offer the safest path to mainstream AI wearable adoption while building consumer comfort with always-on AI companions.
