Walmart is expanding digital shelf labels to all U.S. stores within the next year, the retail giant announced Monday. The technology, already deployed in about 2,300 locations, allows the retailer to update prices instantly, reduce errors, and eliminate paper labels. Store associates can now identify low-stock items and fulfill online orders faster using a mobile app that activates LED lights on relevant shelf labels.

After piloting the system at its Grapevine, Texas, supercenter, Walmart planned to install it at 2,300 locations by 2026. The labels run on a closed system that doesn't interact with shoppers or collect their data. By removing paper labels, Walmart says associates will have more time to assist customers. The company will maintain consistent pricing throughout the day, with price changes implemented during off-hours to build customer trust.

The move is part of Walmart's broader supply chain modernization efforts. The retailer has deployed AI and automation technology to identify and resolve problems in real time without constant manual intervention, according to Indira Uppuluri, senior vice president of supply chain technology. Walmart's infrastructure investments are expected to peak this year and next, with new tools like Scintilla In-Store debuting to aggregate store data for supplier field representatives.
