FedEx will deploy Berkshire Grey's autonomous trailer unloader named Scoop in 2026 to enhance efficiency and safety across its parcel shipping network. The robotic system has been engineered specifically for the challenging task of unloading trailers, which has long been one of the most unpredictable and physically demanding operations in parcel hubs.

Scoop can recognize and handle all package types, enabling consistent inbound flow as it empties trailers from the inside before autonomously exiting. The initiative builds on years of collaboration between FedEx and Berkshire Grey, including previous deployments of robotic sortation systems and agreements to develop broader AI capabilities for package handling operations. FedEx is currently in the final stage of a pilot program at one undisclosed facility.

The deployment represents a significant step in FedEx's automation journey, following earlier tests of AI-powered robots from Dexterity AI for trailer loading. By implementing smart technologies for trailer unloading, FedEx aims to equip its workforce with cutting-edge tools while maintaining high service standards and reducing package-handling costs. The carrier plans to have the first Scoop production units operational later this year, with additional facilities targeted for deployment in 2026.
