Black Forest Labs, the Freiburg-based AI startup behind the Flux image models, has quietly become one of Europe's most valuable AI companies after raising a $300 million Series B at a $3.25 billion valuation. The 18-month-old company's round was co-led by AMP and Salesforce Ventures, with participation from Canva, Figma, a16z, and Nvidia. This financing ranks among Europe's largest AI rounds as the continent captures just 13.6% of global AI venture dollars.

Founded by former Stability AI researchers, Black Forest Labs has positioned itself at the forefront of visual AI with its open-source approach. The company's Flux Kontext model pioneered character consistency in image editing, allowing users to modify photos while maintaining their likeness. Robin Rombach, cofounder, describes this as a glimpse of what "visual intelligence" should look like. The startup's business model combines open-weights releases under non-commercial licenses with enterprise commercial licensing, creating a unique funnel strategy in the AI landscape.

Despite operating in a market dominated by U.S. companies, Black Forest Labs powers image generation for major platforms including Meta and Canva. The founders emphasize building a sustainable company rather than chasing capital markets, with cofounder Andreas Blattmann noting that open source serves as "top-of-funnel" for enterprise adoption. As the company eyes 2028, it aims to become "the standard for visual intelligence" and fundamentally change how machines process visual information.
